Acupuncture has proven to be successful in treating acid reflux.
Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERD or GORD) is a common relapsing condition caused by weakness of cardiac valve/sphincter which as a result of its weakness cannot close properly. This causes exposure of the lower oesophagus to refluxed gastric fluids.
From chinese medicine point of view, cardiac sphincter is governed by the Liver energy. It is therefore the underlying weakness of the Liver energy which is causing cardiac sphincter to be unable to work properly causing symptom of the acid reflux. Often, people who suffer from acid reflux also struggle with other symptoms of the weak Liver energy such as hay fever, sensitive skin or bad eye sight to mention a few.
Acupuncture treatments can be successful in re-balancing and nourishing the Liver energy back to its full strength allowing acid reflux and other relating symptoms to either rapidly decrease or completely disappear.

Embryo Implantation & the Ideal Uterine Lining Explained
There are a number of factors that play a crucial role as to whether an embryo will successfully implant or not. – Namely, a receptive uterine lining which provides a good environment for the embryo to latch onto. The endometrium is affected by hormones, the immune system, stress, diet and circulation. Acupuncture helps create the optimum environment conducive for implantation.
Good levels of oestrogen are needed to stimulate the growth of the uterine lining, while the correct levels of progesterone are important in maintaining it. In some IVF cycles, these hormones are far from ideal and acupuncture can be recommended to establish the desired hormonal balance.
Imbalances in the immune regulation of the womb or autoimmune conditions can affect the embryo’s efforts to implant. For instance, elevated levels of immune cells (natural killer/nk cells) in the uterus and activated T Lymphocytes can hinder implantation. Conversely, the functions of some of the NK cells and T cells are vital for creating a suitable habitat for successful implantation. Again it is about striking the right balance! Acupuncture is extremely effective in strengthening the immune system and reducing inflammation. A successful pregnancy depends on limited inflammation during implantation and immune tolerance (anti-inflammation) during pregnancy. Immune tolerance refers to the incredible ability that a healthy woman has to carry a semi-allogeneic (sharing some, but not all genes) foetus without her immune system rejecting it.
Acupuncture brings blood flow to the uterus, had been shown to improve the quality of the uterine lining and helps to regulate hormones which is critical for implantation and all phases of pregnancy. Acupuncture also reduces stress and the likelihood of uterine contractions after embryo transfer which helps to prevent the embryo being expelled by the uterus.
It is recommended to have acupuncture at least once a week for four weeks before egg retrieval (helps to improve egg quality and the response to IVF drugs), then pre and post embryo transfer (encourages successful implantation) and ideally to continue weekly acupuncture to maintain a healthy pregnancy particularly until the first trimester.

In Shiatsu terms SPRING responds to the element of WOOD in the 5-element cycle and is linked with growth and pushing upwards and outwards. It’s all about fresh new beginnings, the start of new projects and beginnings of life.
When our WOOD energy is balanced and flowing we feel full of energy and bounce, especially in the mornings, we have lots of energy to start new projects, we are flexible and creative and able to see round problems and are not afraid of new things. We have a good sense of humour and enjoy having fun with our friends and family.
So if you’re feeling a bit stiff, frustrated or stuck with decision making, your WOOD energy may not be flowing freely. So be gentle on yourself it may be the frustration of the season trying to burst forth within you.
Here are a few tips that may help you stay balanced: start planning for the summer, get organised, write some lists, set clear goals, spend time on self reflection, be spontaneous & creative, avoid rich foods and late nights, take long walks in nature or start gardening.
Remember not to take yourself too seriously; laughter is a great help in problem solving.
Here’s a quick exercise to help relieve any stuck WOOD energy. It will help improve your flexibility in minutes! Give it a try!
- Bend forward to touch your toes, and make a note of how far forward you can go.
