Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest medical tradition dating as far back as 2,500 years ago. It is known for holistically treating inbalances by addressing the root cause of the problems but is also effective in improving women’s health problems related to premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menopause, fertility, breast and emotional disharmonies.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, female health is closely related to the Blood and the Liver.
Having a slightly different perspective on Blood compared with Western Medicine apart of looking at blood through what it is made up of- red blood cells, white blood cells, etc TCM views the state of Blood in the body more holistically.

By looking into someone’s general vitality, whether there are signs of paleness (face, tongue, nails), what a women’s menstrual cycle is like and the quality of sleep. Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia can sometimes be linked to what in TCM is called Blood deficiency.

Different factors can affect the building of Blood: digestive weakness, overexercise, overwork, stress, genetics, and diet. Women are especially vulnerable to Blood deficiency due to the monthly menstrual bleed, blood loss from labour and the requirement of blood for breastfeeding

For women, the Liver and its meridian is also extremely important since it’s closely linked to their cycle of menstruation. In Chinese medicine, organs are viewed more broadly than in Western medicine. Thus, the liver is an organ known to us from anatomy, but also its meridian, i.e. an energy channel and the functions it performs in the body.

Often the cause of many health problems is seen in “stagnant energy” in that it does not flow as it should. This can be due to lack of physical movement or a feeling of being stuck in a life situation.
When the flow of Qi/energy is disturbed due to chronic tension, emotional stress or any injury along the liver channel, the functioning of organs and tissues powered by this meridian is disturbed.
In women stagnation of Qi in the channel might cause stagnation in the uterus. This can lead to fibroids and menstrual disorders. The liver meridian also runs through the breasts, which is why nodules, cysts, cysts, and fibrosis may also appear in them. Qi stagnation in the liver can also contribute to thyroid problems.

In a treatment room we can help the body to build Blood and restore a smooth flow of innate vitality by an appropriate treatment plan that will involve acupuncture, dietary advise and bodywork tailored specifically for each individual.
