What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is plant-based medicine where the whole herb parts are used as medicine in its natural form.  Herbs work in synergy and a herb blend is personalised after a consultation.

Herbal medicine has been widely used for centuries as effective remedies for the prevention and treatment of many health conditions by almost every culture such as in China and India where its use dates back 5000 years. This extraordinary wealth of experience over the centuries adds to a huge knowledge base combined with latest research. It is estimated that 80% of the world’s population uses herbal medicines.

The effectiveness of herbs to treat ill health is continually being validated by pharmacological research and clinical trials. Today there is much interest by the scientific community on herbal medicines. Scientific analysis shows herbal medicines to contain a wide variety of naturally occurring active constituents (e.g. polyphenols, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, essential oils, fatty acids, vitamins and trace elements) that have the therapeutic effect. What is endobiogenic medicine?

Endobiogenic medicine is a theory of terrain that views the endocrine system as the true manager of the body. This takes an integrated approach to medicine where a comprehensive theory of life integrates the various aspects of human physiology. This involves integration of a case history, physical exam, and detailed evaluation by the biology of functions, a treatment programme is then drawn up that treats the patient and not merely symptoms. Treatment approach

Screening is done before the initial consultation to see if herbal medicine will be suitable for the individual’s health problem.

Using a holistic approach, the treatment is very much focused on optimising the overall health of the individual, as well as providing support for the current complaint.  A mix of whole plant medicines are prepared for the individual, and advice about diet and lifestyle are combined to aid in healing and nourishing the mind, body and soul.

The consultation

The first appointment lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours which involves a detailed case history covering the health complaint the individual has come with and all other aspects of their health, including past medical history, lifestyle, diet, allergies, body systems (respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, nervous, musculoskeletal, urinary, gynaecological and skin) and past and current medications. The investigative questioning is done in order to get to the root of what could be causing a presenting health complaint and also provides information to treat the individual holistically. The individual is requested to bring any medications including any results of tests and investigations.

After the case history a physical examination is performed following consent from the individual.  This generally involves measurement of blood pressure and pulse including any other clinical examination if appropriate.  If necessary the patient may also be referred to their GP for further tests and investigations.

After the consultation a personalised treatment plan is devised and discussed with the individual, with duration of treatment and realistic expectations of health outcomes. Treatment and advice is tailored to each individual depending on their current health status.

The herbal medicines are from reputable herbal suppliers from the UK.  The medicines may take about 20-30 minutes to prepare in addition to the appointment time. These will usually be made up on the day.  Repeat prescriptions may also be arranged for collection or dispatched by courier.

Follow-up appointments last between 30-45 minutes.  The first follow-up appointment will usually be two weeks after the first visit to review progress and to check how the individual has been responding to the herbal medicine, dietary/lifestyle changes and if the herbal medicine needs to be adapted in any way.  Further appointments are spaced out at four to six week intervals.  After the first few consultations longer duration of time is usually left between consultations.
