Reflexology for Pregnancy

with Adriana Pop at Chelsea Natural Health Clinic, Fulham Rd, SW10

Reflexology is a natural holistic therapy which works on physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of your well being by applying a gentle pressure to specific points (reflexes) on hands or feet.

Maternity reflexology is specially tailored to treat infertility, pregnancy, birth and puerperium (post natal care).

The Association of Reflexologists believes that reflexology can be of great benefit to people suffering from fertility problems by positively directing the flow of energy where is needed.

During pregnancy reflexology can help with the relief of many complaints:

  • morning sickness
  • stress and anxiety
  • headaches and migraines
  • swollen and puffy ankle and legs
  • high blood pressure
  • insomnia
  • digestive problems
  • backache

Many women have reflexology to encourage labour, especially if they are overdue. It has been proved that reflexology can help induce labour and reduce pain during childbirth. Reflexology stimulates the release of oxytocin to encourage the onset of uterine contractions. Having a course of reflexology in pregnancy may reduce the overall length of labour. During childbirth applying pressure to the specific reflex points will help to reduce pain while keeping contractions recurrent and successful.

Postnatal period: reflexology can help adjusting to the demands of coping with a new baby. This is the time the new mothers can particularly benefit from reflexology to:

  • -rebalance the body
  • -aid calm and relaxation
  • -maintaining and increasing milk supply
  • -helping with postnatal depression and general relaxation
  • -increase energy level

Contraindications: include major placental disturbances, ectopic pregnancy, threatened miscarriage fever or infection and any unstable pregnancy.
