PUTTING STRESS INTO PERSPECTIVE

Nobody leads a stress-free life. What may leave one person knotted up with worry or anxiety, another can take with as pinch of salt.To help you put your bad moments into perspective, let’s identify your personal breaking point .

1)

Think about how you feel when you are completely relaxed and at ease.Think of a time and place you felt calm and comfortable and able to be at ease, no matter what was going on around you. Notice the sensations in your body and your breathing. THIS is the bottom end of your personal stress-scale.

Now picture the opposite. Try to remember the MOST stressful, awful, horrendous situation you have ever found yourself in, where you felt helpless and with no control over anything. Focus on how terrible it feels. THIS is the opposite of your stress-/ continuum-scale.

The next time you catch yourself feeling stressed, ask yourself: Where am I on my personal scale right now? You can then take relevant action and implement any skills you already know you do well to shift your focus out of the stress-zone. Sometimes, simply realising and taking stock of where you’re at is sufficient for you to be reassured you are doing OK, since you are rarely near your personal worst-case- zone of stress. Or, you may very well opt to distance yourself from the situation and take a break. Alternatively, you may need to re-assess your priorities and STOP getting too involved in the stress-inducing situation, task or behaviour, thought or emotion which is causing you pointless, intolerable pressure, draining your energy and getting you nowhere.
