Health – The Final Frontier by Craig Coman
Health – The Final Frontier by Craig Coman, Fulham Rd, SW10
I had someone walk in my door this week and they had a tummy upset that had gone on for 4 days. We were on the phone daily and I was aware this person was getting more and more frustrated and worn down by the vomiting, no sleep and generally feeling yucky! That’s a technical term we use! I asked her to go with it and ride out the storm at a stage when she wanted to go to the Dr and see what it was. Well in reality there would have been a guess (bacterial or viral) and the possibility of antibiotics would have been very high – even though they don’t work on viruses. Tummy problems like this do not generally last that long and there was nothing else in the history that worried me. She had eaten only vegetables the day it came on and there was none of the usual worrying factors like have been to a restaurant or ate some seafood etc.
The next day she explained that she hated me because indeed she did feel better – not 100% but definitely could eat now and go outside. What I explained to her is really important so this is the juicy bit. Today I believe – yes I am very clear it is only my opinion! I believe that we go for the quick fix in all areas of life including health and ironically it makes us weaker or in medical terms it takes us towards disease. If you have a headache and you take a painkiller have you moved towards health or disease?
Disease———————————–You———————————————-Health
Well think of health on one end of a scale and disease on the other. You are right in the middle of that scale and obviously wanting to get to health. If that headache is now gone you are under the illusion you are now better – you are not. Don’t shoot the messenger you are just not! If that headache is caused by dehydration then what have the painkillers done for your hydration levels – worse or better? I’ll tell you – its worse. You see the kidneys and liver have to deal with the toxicity of the drugs. Now lets look at a few organs to really see this impact. If you are slightly dehydrated is your blood thicker or thinner? That’s right – thicker (less water) so what does your heart have to do? Pump harder perhaps? What about your lungs? The lungs are a very fluid organ that is how they get toxins out – they wrap them in water. Just breathe on some glasses and notice what you see. You breathe out about a litre of water per day. So if you are slightly dehydrated what do your lungs have to do? Yes yes yes – work harder. In effect you are throwing vitality down the drain just by being dehydrated. Your joints have fluid in them – do you think they may have to work harder? What about your kidneys, liver, bowel (no wonder there is so much constipation out there). So you may have got rid of the pain but you have definitely taken a step towards disease or what I call dis-ease which is where the word comes from. It is when the body is out of ease just look at the word (dis-ease). Every single organ system in your body will now have to work harder because you are slightly more dehydrated. Now do we feel this? No because it is only slight – so we feel a little more tired, a little more niggly maybe, a bit achey etc. All I am suggesting is make choices towards health when possible. If the person with this headache had drank water they would have nourished every organ in their body but they would have needed to listen to what the signal (headache) was saying. Today we do not listen – we just want to ignore it or get the quick fix. How long does that work for and what is the cost?
What about instead of trying to fix dis-ease we go towards health. People often say “Craig it’s amazing not only is my …. better but also my sleep, my moods, my ….. how is that possible? Well if you clean up the blood guess how many departments work better? If you improve nerve supply which is information, and blood supply which is food to every cell, then will it perform better? You bet! This is not rocket science is it? Off course it will work better and that is what we call health. That should be our final goal not just numbing symptoms surely! There are many people today performing and feeling less able, confident and vital than they could and it is primarily down to their state of health. I have been treating people for many years and I have seen people with terrible business or financial difficulties cope very well AND I have seen some with normal day to day stresses struggle. Health must be one of the major components to us coping.
Choose health – it works.
The use of frontier to mean “a region at the edge of a settled area” is a special North American development (wikipedia). Too many people today are settling on the edge of dis-ease. Let health be your frontier – go for it and see how many people and areas of your life are impacted. Good luck.
